Winter Oranges

Another illustration (1 of 4) I was commissioned to create for La Montana, a range of gorgeous scented candles inspired by a British couple’s new life in a delightful Spanish mountain village. This one was called “Winter Oranges” – the scent is a warm, spicy, zesty blend of Valencia orange, cinnamon, red apple, and clove.

This illustration was quite fiddly to do, in particular my attempt to make the ingredients as simple in form but still recognisable through the use of limited shapes and colour. I maybe didn’t pare it down enough, I have a habit of wanting to keep adding more and more detail to drawings but actually often, and especially in this case, less is more. Some of the vintage travel posters these illustrations were inspired by were created so simply with a very limited colour palette and line work and they look amazing – it’s quite a skill, one I’m working on and keen to explore. I’m certainly interested to find out what it smells like as I’m sure it will be warming and delicious – a perfect Christmas scent (not that far away now…)

The Silmarillion • J.R.R. Tolkien

An imagined book cover I created for the unfinished The Silmarillin by Tolkien.
The commission was for inclusion in the title The Greatest Books You’ll Never Read by Bernard Richards.

The watercolour painting is my own creation and great to be able to use it for this cover, I felt it was a perfect fit, I just had to find a way to add the necessary text and combine the two in an appropriate and interesting way.

The book is out now in the UK and US, and actually contains a total of 7 book cover designs by me! You can see them all here.

Alfredo’s Cafe

An illustration (1 of 4) I was commissioned to create for La Montana, a range of luxury scented candles inspired by the wonderful sights and scents of Spain.

This one was called Alfredo’s Cafe – the scent is an unusual, rich, comforting blend of coffee, brandy, black tobacco, leather and incense.

I was happy with how this turned out, I think it might be my favourite of them all. It’s simple but powerful and striking (even if I disapprove of smoking!), with strong bold shapes and muted but intense colours. It feels sturdy and substantial. Plus I’d certainly be interested to find out what it smells like.

1001 Beers

Here are some vector illustrations I created for the cover of the best selling book
1001 Beers You Must Try Before You Die which was updated in 2013:

The drawing style had to be in keeping with the previous edition. I tried all sorts of different glass and bottles shapes in order to find the perfect one but in the end we used almost all of them on the cover!

Belated Prezzie

I received a lovely surprise in the post at work the other day, a belated xmas gift from my brother and his girlfriend, which was sent all they way over from Bordeaux, once they had returned back to their flat there after spending the festive season over here. The contents were delightful, spot on as usual, Leila is ever so good at choosing gifts perfectly suited for each person (quite a skill!). The package included a myriad of little gifts, each one as good as, if not better than the last, but importantly it also contained this cute christmas themed illustrated card by Leila herself to top it all off (she is a wonderful children’s book illustrator – see more of her fabulous work here) do check it out, I’m sure you’ll love her style, I certainly do, and I’m going to hold on to and treasure this little one!

LeilaRudgeIllustrationA simple but delightful drawing, and one that I can certainly relate to at this very moment in time, the temperature has dropped considerably these days, layering up is an absolute must!

Swiss Cabin

Finally got round to working on an ink and watercolour painting that I started last summer when on holiday in the Swiss mountains. The houses there are so beautiful, intricate and full of life that it is impossible not to be fascinated and want to capture their charm.

I tend to be over cautious with colour/intensity/darkness when using watercolour (which is odd as I primarily love images with strong contrast). I seem to find it hard to have the confidence to be brave and go bold. Instead I tend to build it up slowly layer by layer but that isn’t really how watercolours should be used….!  It is almost there but there are still most certainly some finishing touches that need to be done.
