Here is the Quintessence Editions 2014 Catalogue that I art-directed and designed. It showcases the companies upcoming illustrated reference titles in the subject areas of Food & Drink, History & Culture, Gardening, Design, Natural History and Spirituality, as well as highlighting all their other best-selling book series, including the 1001 Before You Die and The Whole Story series (to name but a few!). I had free reign of the visual design of the catalogue. I came up with a concept and look that fitted the brief – I just had to ensure the books were displayed in their best possible light, and work out a suitable template taking into consideration the multitude of book shapes and sizes and the varying amount of space allocated for each title. All the necessary text and specification details need to be included, in an appropriate hierarchy and kept consistent and coherent throughout to produce a cohesive catalogue that is easy to use, provides essential information, promotes the publications and portrays the Quintessence ethos. With the fairly small format (145 x 210mm) I was keen to introduce colour and excitement through use of images, particularly be using large, striking full bleeds to attract attention, engage viewers, complement the cover designs and create depth. The covers displayed on their own could be uninspiring, and become particularly repetitive in this instance. I personally thought it essential to provide as much extra insight into the books as possible and portray the content and feeling of the books through the choice of images and supporting material.
