At first I was skeptical about recreating a new text with my Wenglish language, I thought it wouldn’t ever be able to have the same impact as the original text I wrote when I was 9, but I also felt it would be good to have something more up to date and preferably well known as a base for translation so then the impact of the realisation of what it actually is (should be) would be more pronounced (hopefully!).
I was trying to find the most famous text, something everyone (or the large majority) would know and be familiar with and I came across things like the ten commandments (bible), Martin Luther King’s famous ‘I have a dream’ speech, William Shakespears’ Sonnets, the Lord’s Prayer (bible)…
I tried transcribing the Lords Prayer, the original:Our Father who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil, For thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. would become something like: Awah farthur hw art in hevan, halowd bi thay neym, Thay cingdum cum, thay wyl bi dun, on urth as yt ys yn hevan. Gyv us thys dei awr deyly bred and fawgyv us awah trespases as wi fogyv thows hu trespas ageinst us And leed us not yntw temtayshion but delyvah us from evul. Faw thein is thy cingdum, and thu pawah and thu gloree, faw evah and evah. Amen.
so… what do you think??
It would need to be presenting in an expected way how it would be usually seen I guess… Just as a poster? In a prayer book? In the Bible?? Not keen on getting religious, I had no intention and I’m not sure if it’s OK, does it get in the way? Will people interpret my intention wrongly?? What font, how to be printed? Paper? Engraved?
Now I almost think it would be better if it was an unknown text!! So you don’t know what is coming next and you really have to read rather than skim over the words… hmm
